2012 Write to Publish High School Scholarship

Helping young writers by demystifying the publishing process

Are you a high school student? Do you love to write, and wish you knew how to get your work published? Come check out Write to Publish (W2P), a one-day conference that demystifies the publishing industry for writers, hosted by Ooligan Press. Whether you are interested in publishing or writing, we would love to have you attend! Since Ooligan is a graduate program teaching publishing, we welcome students who want to explore the world of publishing before graduating high school. W2P is the perfect opportunity to gain an insight into the publishing industry, and find out if you can see yourself as an editor, agent, publisher, or writer in the future. This year our theme is “Step into Genre,” and we will be hosting a variety of local genre authors, as well as a number of local publishers and industry professionals. Come see Phillip Margolin, Chelsea Cain, P.R. Frost, William Nolan, and Suzanne Young speak about their personal experiences with publishing. You’re also welcome to sit in on workshops about the basics of editing, marketing your book and yourself, and writing and publishing genre fiction, non-fiction, and more.
Application Deadline:
Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Event Date/Time:
Saturday, April 28, 2012, 9:00AM to 6:00PM

The Rundown:
The W2P Scholarship covers the full cost of this one-day conference. It allows high school students to attend author presentations and to sit in on workshop discussions with a variety of digital, niche, traditional, and self-publishers. While at the conference, students can spend the day rubbing elbows with some of their favorite authors and publishers while hearing what it takes to get their comic, flash fiction story, or novel published.

Guidelines:
All Oregon and Washington high school students are eligible to apply. There will be one student selected from each school district. Awards are based on students’ personal statements and teacher recommendations. Winners will be notified by April 20, 2012.

To Apply:
Please copy the application and email the filled out form to events@ooliganpress.pdx.edu with your name and the words “W2P Scholarship” in the subject line (e.g. Robin Smith W2P Scholarship).
