Developmental Edit

Special Offer: Developmental Edit

(EXTENDED) Deadline: April 8th, 2012

Do you have a brilliant manuscript just sitting in a drawer because you don’t know what to do next? Have you spent hours staring at the computer screen, pondering your next plot twist before throwing your hands up in defeat? Perhaps you have been working on it for years; perhaps it is your National Novel Writing Month manuscript. Your writing wants to be developed! It’s time to shake things up by bringing in another set of eyes—someone objective and experienced to look at your work. Someone like a friendly Ooligan grad student.

Once a year, during the Write to Publish conference, twenty writers are given the opportunity to receive a partial developmental edit and a one-on-one editing consultation from Ooligan Press. Graduate student editors will read and review a portion of your manuscript—fifty pages for $50.

Developmental editing looks at the big picture of your work, assessing the overall strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript. This type of editing examines the overarching structure of the manuscript, focusing on plot, character development, setting, dialogue, point of view, and voice. After reading your sample pages, your editor will write an editing plan to help you revise your manuscript, noting things for you to consider, such as:

●      What questions are left unanswered?

●      Do the characters come to life?

●      Is the plot advancing effectively?

●      How is the pace? The tone?

If you are interested in receiving a developmental edit from one of Ooligan’s editors, please do the following:

  1. Submit the first fifty pages of your manuscript, along with a plot summary, through Submishmash at http://writetopublish.submishmash.com/submit.
  2. Mail your payment for the $50 editing fee (checks or money orders should be made payable to PSU Foundation, with Ooligan Press in the memo line) to the address listed below. No cash or credit cards accepted.

Manuscripts must be received by Sunday, April 1st, 2012.

Any submissions received after this date cannot be included in this year’s conference due to time constraints on the editors. Please send your completed payment form and check or money order to:
