Announcing the “celebrity judges” for this year’s flash fiction contest: Jay Lake and Ken Scholes. They will be choosing the three winners for this year’s contest, and those winners will have a chance to meet Jay and Ken in person at the conference!
We’ve also extended the Flash Fiction contest for two more weeks. Take advantage of this to submit your 500-words-or-less piece for a chance to win free tickets to Write to Publish. If you’re a winner you’ll also have your piece designed as a poster by our design department, and it will be featured around the conference . . . → Read More: Flash Fiction Contest Special Judges and Extended Deadline

Who is your favorite author?
That’s a hard question. There are so many authors that I go to when I need a good read. And I can’t say there’s one particular genre either. But I’ll share some of my favorites with you.
Susan Elizabeth Philips
Tess Gerritsen
Lisa Gardner
Justine Davis
Mariah Stewart
Lenora Worth
Oh, my, the list could go on and on.

Who is your favorite author?
My favorite author is Edith Wharton. There is a romanticism that meshes an anguished reality that pokes at everything I am.
What inspired you to write? What inspired you to get published?
When Hemingway was once asked what makes for a good writer, his response was, “An Unhappy childhood.” And sadly, I fall into that category. Writing is an extension of my emotions and a need to escape. I’ve been doing it since childhood as a result of my unhappiness. That unhappiness, however, turned into a joy, and it’s rippled through . . . → Read More: Meet Delilah Marvelle

Our volunteers from Ooligan had a great time on Thursday at Art Spark with FAB PDX art space and Portland Story Theater. We raffled off tickets to the conference as well as a few of our titles: Blue Thread, Ooligan’s newest young adult book, and You Have Time for This, Ooligan’s flash fiction collection. For the tickets, we held a contest: create a new title for that book cover. We took the titles and author names off the covers, and let the attendees make up their own titles. Here are the book covers (all from our attending authors) and . . . → Read More: Art Spark Recap

Who is your favorite author?
Public domain - Jane Austen. Still collecting royalties – Vicki Lewis Thompson.
What inspired you to write? What inspired you to get published?
I can’t recall not writing, or at least retelling stories to entertain myself. Writing for publication was a bucket list event. In the middle of a health crisis, I thought it truly is now or never.
What is your favorite moment from working with an editor? An agent?
There are lots of fun memories. When sales spiked for Compromising Positions, my editor and I were emailing constantly because no . . . → Read More: Meet Jenna Bayley-Burke

Who is your favorite author?
Jim Butcher – but for his Harry Dresden series. I just love the world he created for Harry and I’m in awe of his imagination. Overall, it would have to be Stephen King. He’s so wickedly scary and such a genius at creating terror on the page.
What inspired you to write? What inspired you to get published?
I’ve always written. I don’t remember anything specific that led me in this direction. I just remember always writing. I loved English Composition and writing essays, I was the editor of my school’s newspaper and since . . . → Read More: Meet Cassiel Knight

Who is your favorite author?
Joseph Conrad
What inspired you to write? What inspired you to get published?
I began reading voraciously in elementary school. I was always in awe of authors. It never occurred to me that I would be able to write something that someone would publish. In my last semester in law school I had some free time so I decided to write a novel because I couldn’t figure out how anyone could possibly do it. In my mid-30s I sold a short story to a national publication so that gave me the self-confidence . . . → Read More: Meet Phillip Margolin

Who is your favorite author? It really depends on genre–I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Jenny Crusie for contemporary romance, and adored Anne McCaffrey and David Eddings for fantasy. In young adult, I’m all over the place, but I love just about everything Meg Cabot writes.
What inspired you to write? What inspired you to get published?
I don’t think there’s a specific inspiration. I’d say it’s more like an obsession. Or maybe a disorder. Definitely not healthy, but I definitely can’t get rid of it!
